"Now Featuring" Live Streaming Class

"Now Featuring" Live Streaming Class JanuaryJan 23 2022 01:00pm - FebruaryFeb 27 2022 04:00pm

Sundays | 6 weeks | January 23rd – February 27th | 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm (Central Time)

Of the many challenges of portraiture, learning to draw the facial features convincingly and with confidence is among the most daunting. Students frequently struggle with understanding the intricacies of the eyes, ears, nose and mouth, leading to errors that can easily detract from otherwise successful portraits.

“Now Featuring” is our solution to this problem. This 6 week class focuses on drawing the 4 major features of the face: eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Students will be supplied with multiple reference images of these features, seen from different angles of view. Vitruvian instructors will discuss the relevant anatomical structures and how various forms can be understood conceptually, with practical demonstrations presented live on camera.

This class will have two instructors working simultaneously on camera. David Jamieson will execute the drawing demonstrations, while Melinda Whitmore will sculpt the features 3-dimensionally in clay. This unique, two-pronged approach to the presentation will allow students to develop their drawings along with David, step-by-step, while gaining additional insight from Melinda about the 3-dimensional structure of the features that is best conveyed through sculpture.

By the end of the class, students will have executed several drawings, both in line and with limited light & shade development.

This class will be streamed live on Zoom every week. The primary class session will meet on Sunday afternoons (Central time) when the instructor(s) will demonstrate live on-camera for three hours. Each week's demo will focus on a particular aspect of the major facial features, and students are encouraged to work along with the instructor(s) and ask questions in real time.

For students unable to attend the live a session, a recording will be made available on our website for one week until the next class session begins.

High-quality photo references will be made available to all students at the beginning of the class. These will be the same references the instructors will use, and as such we'll all be able to draw the same things, at the same time, from the same point of view - something not possible with traditional on-ground classes with a live model. Another advantage of this format is students will be able to work on their drawings between classes, and optionally share their with the rest of the class on our website.
