Description

A successful portrait often begins with a block-in. That’s the early linear stage of a drawing where we establish the broad 2-dimensional shapes of the model’s silhouette that are the foundation of a convincing likeness.

Later, we turn our attention to light & shade, where we describe volume and illumination with tonal values and gradations.

But what comes in between?

In practice, the separation between linear and tonal work isn’t very strict. Instead, a drawing can benefit from a kind of intermediate stage of development–part linear, part tonal–where we work out the complex terrain of facial structure and anatomy. Mapping the topography of the head and face, like a surveyor documenting the landscape, provides a more specific road map for later tonal development than a rudimentary block-in can provide, leading to a heightened sense of naturalism and sculptural form in a completed portrait.

Beyond the Block-In will focus on this intermediate stage of portraiture. Students will develop 3 different portrait drawings in 6 weeks, each one spanning 2 class sessions. Instructor David Jamieson will perform extensive demonstrations on-camera, leading students through a detailed mapping of the essential convexities of the head and face. Students are encouraged to work along with David during class, and ask questions in real time.

Primary class sessions will be streamed live on Zoom every Wednesday from 12:00pm to 3:00pm Central Time. Enrolled students will also have access to an exclusive area on our website, featuring a Q&A forum and other class resources. For students unable to attend the live on Wednesdays, recordings of each class session will be available for the entire 6 week duration of the class, plus one week following.

High resolution photo references will be made available to all students for each portrait–the same references that David will be using for the on-camera demonstrations.
