Excellent course! David’s instruction was slow, concise and very easy to understand. This is by far the best portrait drawing course I’ve seen. I’ve been drawing on and off for many years and just recently started to get serious about drawing. I’ve felt my portrait drawings were always missing something but since watching this course I can see what I need to do differently to improve my drawings. I highly recommend this course.

This course provided detailed, step by step instruction on portrait drawing. Observing the instructor while he described what he was doing and why increased my knowledge of the process and the methods used. Having the opportunity to work along with him helped me practice the demonstrated skills. The instructor was at all times clear and concise. Being able to repeat the program at my own pace will help me hone the skills I need to progress in portrait drawing. The course reinvigorated my enthusiasm for drawing. I wholeheartedly recommend this course!

This is the best practical online course I have yet taken. I always thought there had to be rules about drawing faces but just didn’t know what they might be. I recently tried the Andrew Loomis method, the results of which were ok for a beginner but still not very good. However this course is a step-change. In a very short time I have learned to draw faces realistically, with some success. Highly recommend.

I have extremely enjoyed learning the course! I love drawing but never took any course. I have a special interest for portraits but never used to get a perfect drawing. After taking the course, I am able to locate the features precisely. I am in love with the triangulation method and the entire course. David Jamieson has been very helpful in guiding through the whole course and never missed any details. I thank you, David, for the extremely useful course especially for beginners like me.

Vitruvian Studio’s Portrait Drawing Course is worth it’s “weight” in gold! I’ve taken atelier drawing and painting programs but have been disconnected from it so long that I couldn’t work past my fear of starting again with art. Mr Jamieson’s verbal instruction and video demos were thorough, systematic, comprehensive and easy-to-understand and apply. I’m so pleased with my finished drawing and I feel it is better than those I did when I was regularly practicing portraiture. I am so happy to have worked through my artist fear of trying again. Looking forward to the still life painting workshop now! Thank you David Jamieson!

Very, Very well done and lots of information for portrait drawing and for drawing in general. I learnt so much and the best part is that I can go back and review whenever I want . Thank you David!!

I found the course to be very detailed and informing. The lessons were at a digestible length and helped me in my first steps of learning to draw a portrait. I feel I have a better idea of sighting and understanding of the human facial features and how to convert them into a drawing. Thank you.

This is a wonderful practical drawing course. David sets out a clear and logical method from the blank page right through to the final realistic portrait. Everything is demonstrated. I learned how to see, what to look for, how to take things one step at a time, how to decide for myself what pencil might work, how to blend, how to use an eraser, and how useful a drawing tool it is. And lots, lots more. Completely practical. Completely absorbing. The whole atmosphere and tone is of being in a real studio, working hard, and being encouraged. You don’t need the critique addition to get great value from the course. But I think that if you can sign up for the critiques too, you really should – they add so much to what I got from the course. You don’t need to sign up for them at the start – see how it goes first – I signed up after the first few drawing sessions.

This is a wonderful class in portrait drawing. For someone considering taking this class, I’d recommend taking a class in basic drawing before tackling the much harder subject of drawing a likeness of a person. That being said, I thought the material is well presented.

Thank you Vitruvian Studio for making this course. It is an absolute gem and the knowledge we gain is priceless. What I personally loved about this course is that it makes you build a strong foundation. The simplicity and calmness with which David guides us through the entire course will make you fall in love with portrait drawing all over again. Before picking this course I had drawn quite a number of portraits and had also achieved getting the likeness but I always felt that a certain polish or refinement of the sketch is needed. Also, there was always a doubt in me that whether I will be able achieve the likeness every time I did a portrait drawing. Thanks to this course my portrait drawings has improved significantly and there is greater sense of belief within myself. Thank you

This course helped me figure out how to draw the portrait more effectively and shade with more caution. I highly recommend it.

What a fabulous course. Through a slow and steady progression, David will guide you through on creating a realistic pencil portrait drawing. As you build you’re drawing up, David sneakily drops in a considerable amount of additional education, about musculature, about rendering three dimensional objects on a flat plane, about the merits and drawbacks of different papers, pencils and other materials. If you take your time, are not afraid to view your work critically and approach redrawing as an opportunity (not a punishment!) you may be pleasantly surprised upon completing the module. I haven’t done any protrait since I was a child copying my spiderman comics nearly thirty years ago, but by the end of the module I had a realistic, and frankly, quite beautiful drawing that I had completed by myself. I strongly recommend purchasing the portrait critiques. David has a lifetime of experience to draw on, and he’s able to quickly identify any issues in your drafting and provide actionable suggestions on correcting those issues. The portrait critiques saved my bacon more than once, allowing me to “see” misproportions on the page that would have resulted in a warped finally product. Correcting as I went was easy and well worth the extra money and time. This is the best online course I have ever taken. The pacing, video and audio quality, the feedback mechanisms. It left me feeling empowered and excited about what my next steps will be

This is the best drawing class I have ever taken. Its structure, videos, notes, flexibility and ability to contact the featured artist make it a thorough and enlightening course. I have learnt so much and while I am very happy with the end result, the class has made me recognise further areas that need improvement and has given me the ability to improve on those. I look forward to doing the class again and then taking on the challenge of working with other portrait subjects.

A truly excellent and useful course. I’ve been battling with getting proportions and distances correct and taking this course has moved my abilities miles forward! I also wanted to improve my work with light and shadow and – oh, boy – does this learning experience do the trick! Thank you, David – for sharing your brilliant techniques!

This is an excellent course. I’m retired. Just started drawing last year and in this course my understanding of how to draw improved dramatically. I love the logical step by step approach to attacking a pretty complicated problem. David is an excellent instructor. Now my confidence and interest in doing more is over the moon. I can’t wait to draw another portrait. I’ll be back for more. Thank you so very much,Lee

DO NOT HESISTATE to sign up for this course! This is the real deal. You will improve your skills. You will grow in your love and understanding of what you are drawing. You will get excited. You will say, “Wow, I wish I’d found this earlier…” The excellence that David Jamieson brings to his teaching and demonstration in his Portrait Drawing course is unmatched anywhere. I’ve drawn for many years, but I felt I had reached an impasse with my drawing and wanted help to move forward, especially in portraiture. This is it! David emphasizes understanding the underlying form and structure, and learning to model that structure as if sculpting… instead of just shading a flat surface to make it “appear” to have form. That was a game-changer for me! I’m so enthusiastic about the course because it’s so effective. A FIVE-STAR EXPERIENCE.

The online Portrait drawing course was brilliant and great value for money. I had alway enjoyed drawing when I was a kid, but didn’t imagine that with the Vitruvian course, I could produce a portrait like the one I’ve just completed in only a few weeks. David steps you through every skill you need to produce realistic portraits. I opted for the critique feedback, too, and found these to be invaluable. Highly recommended!! Thanks so much David..

This is an extremely thorough course, that makes you think about every aspect of portrait drawing. David is a very clear and patient teacher. The slow pace helps you get to grips with what to do and the reasons why you’re doing it. I’ve drawn portraits before but I’ve never given them this degree of consideration. I feel very confident that the portraits I draw in the future will bear out everything I’ve learnt on this course and be all the better for it. Thank you.

This course offers a comprehensive overview of pencil drawing that not only gives you step by step instruction but also shows you with the online demonstration how you might try the technique yourself. This method of online demonstration/lecture allows you to repeat sections until you gain understanding but also allows for email questions to further problem-solve and clarify. With his experience, David can anticipate your question often giving you a reason why you would approach drawing in a particular manner. Knowing why a technique could be used gives me a handle on creating better art and being able to critique why something does not work in my drawing. Thank you!

I would highly recommend this course for anyone looking to develop their portrait drawing skills. The drawing process is broken down into manageable steps, and each phase is thoroughly explained, which for me made something that seemed quite daunting into something very doable and fun!

This course was exactly what I was looking for in portrait instruction. I purchased the individual critique add on and found it well worth the extra money. It helped me identify the areas I could work on. Also, it helped me to understand how to use graphite more effectively. I really learned a lot about the different pencils! I will be looking to do some other courses in the future I’m sure, after I’ve practiced a few more portraits!
Heather Peterson (verified owner) –
I loved the course. You get a front row seat watching the instructor draw a portrait step by step, explaining what he is doing as he proceeds. The content is broken into segments so you can watch each segment as you have time. I think it’s an excellent course for anyone who wants to learn to draw realistic portraits.
Heather Peterson (verified owner) –
I highly recommend this course. The teacher takes you through the whole process of drawing a portrait, from start to finish. As you watch him proceed through the process, he explains what he is doing, the tools he is using, and things you should be aware of. You can work at your own pace, since the sessions are online and pre-recorded. I recommend you also submit your drawings for feedback. The teacher will look at them and provide feedback on your drawing that is very beneficial.

Thank you for a fabulous course, I would highly recommend to anyone. I appreciate your organized and meticulous approach to approaching the portrait. Best takeaway from the drawing course personally was the benefit of slowing right down, allowing for not only a good foundation but also then being able to enjoy the process of building the portrait up layer by layer. I also really loved the fact that you described the names and shapes of the anatomy on the face in each section and how the planes of the face are then affected as a result. Whilst I already had a reasonable understanding of the face, this course has helped me increase my knowledge and will help my drawing move to the next level. Suggestion: If you do another course with another model (would be extremely interested), can I suggest that the photograph eference matches your angle of view from the drawing board. Thanks again 🙂

I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in drawing, no matter how good their skills are at the moment. David has so much comprehensive information about different stages of realist drawing, solid methodology and valuable tips, all nicely structured and well presented in this course. I enjoyed so much learning from David, from his demonstration drawing and the additional information provided in the course, that I can definitely say that this course exceeded my expectations, and I had some great ones. I am so grateful for that I have found such a wonderful teacher, so knowledgeable and experienced, and who is so passionate about teaching and sharing everything he knows and does that in such a well organized and encouraging way. The course has a good systematic structure that makes it perfect for further practicing by repeating all the steps with new drawings. This is what makes the course even more exciting and beneficial. Vitruvian Fine Art Studio is a great place to learn and develop one’s artistic skills; and taking this online course still felt like I became a part of it. And I will definitely come back there, as learning and improving are the biggest drivers along my art journey.

I’ve taken several portrait drawing courses over the years. This course is the best by far. It was extremely well conceived and executed from start to finish. Each module was the perfect length to help the student build his drawing stepwise, and permitted time to absorb the content. This was emphasized by downloadable PDF’s that clarified the topics that were covered. It was also helpful to hear how the instructor thought about each step, and to see his patience and watch his attention to detail. I also highly recommend signing up for the on-line critique that accompanies this course. The instructor is very encouraging but makes a concerted effort to help guide you through improving your shortcomings. The critiques are worth every penny. I’m thankful for what I’ve learned in this course.

I have just completed the The portrait drawing course and the Anatomy of the Face Course and I am about to start the Still Life Painting. Both courses were so enjoyable to learn from as you can work through them at your own pace and also review them at any time. Both David and Melinda have great teaching skills and I look forward to starting my Still Life Painting Course and maybe some others in the future. I recommend these courses highly to anyone trying to decide whether to do them or not. I have learnt so much , Thank you David and Melinda.

Great course. Great instruction. I have tried several online art classes. None compare to this one, and I hope to take additional courses from Vitruvian in the future. David does not rush through his presentations and does not leave out the details, requiring the students to guess how to fill in the blanks like many other online courses do. I would recommend this course to anyone. Thanks David.

If you are debating whether or not you should purchase this course, don’t! If I would have known the amount of detail and complexity this course included, I would have even paid double! Although I consider myself to be a talented individual (when it comes to art), I had never focused my time on drawing realistic portraits. After carefully taking time at every lesson, my final portrait amazes me! The techniques are not easy, but they work. I am looking forward to going through the course a second time with a different reference photo. Do not hesitate! David is very good at explaining every little aspect that is needed to draw a good portrait.

The best drawing course I’ve ever done! It is worth every single euro! The part that has given me the most satisfaction for now is how to begin to understand how to measure the proportions at the beginning of my drawing. The road is still long, but it is also beautiful for this reason. Thanks, Nino

This course was very helpful, thank you! The process really forced me to slow down and pay attention to my drawing instead of rushing though it like I usually do. It reminded me how enjoyable drawing can be and I really look forward to applying what I learnt in this class to my future drawings.

The range (and high level) of knowledge around the technicalities of of portrait drawing imparted here is invaluable. I thought I already had a reasonable degree of patience when drawing, but this is a whole other level, and for good reason; the results – even where there is significant room for improvement (as in my case!) – are amazing. Watching, re-watching, and watching again how skillfully and precisely David works to develop the forms has given me a much fuller understanding of how I’ll need to work on improving my own process and has gotten me excited about drawing again, something I’ve not felt in years. Thanks so much!

I just finished the Portrait Drawing course and couldn’t be happier with the results of my portrait! I have taken a couple of online courses and this one is so superior that it’s in a league of its own. Drawing along with David while he quietly educates you on every stroke and every material that you use makes it so easy to follow. Each portrait that I draw from now on I will repeat the course again and again, trying to practice with all of the detailed instruction that is given. One day, once all the techniques are engraved into my brain, I will hopefully be able to do it on my own! I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to improve their drawing skills and especially those who, like me, haven’t had much professional training.

David as far as I am concerned your online videos set the standard for all other instructional drawing videos on the Internet. I am absolutely thrilled I purchased your course. If I had known how good it was before purchasing it I would have paid twice as much. Good job Buddy!

Despues de mucho pensarlo me he decidido y he comprado el curso.
Saludos Fernando. Gracias

James Elkins professor of art history notes, ” that despite much talk about instilling visual acuity and teaching technique, in practice neither teachers nor students behave as if those were their principal goals.” Having completed the online portrait drawing course I can say unequivocally that David really focused on visual acuity and provided a superior teaching technique. This course provides a quantum leap for the student if she/he is willing to invest the time and follow the carefully created and comprehensive approach offered. Many thanks David.

I am about half-way through this course and love it.
It is very clear, informative, and presented in a way that one can conceptualize and retain what is presented. I read somewhere that most purchasers do not purchase the critique option. Mistake! The critiques are extremely helpful and keep one on track. Spend the money and buy the whole package; you won’t regret it.

I just finished watching the online drawing course for the first time; I’m speechless as how much I learned. At first I was reluctant about purchasing this as many other artists are selling courses and it seems like they keep adding on and on new things to learn. This is without a doubt the best investment I have made to learn drawing. David is exceptional in his explanation and attention to details. The fact that I can go back and review the course as many times as I want is priceless. Thanks David.

WOW! This is a great course, thank you! With a job, wife and kids time for me to draw is limited. To attend a class is hard for me. This is definitely the next best thing. I have many books on drawing but I need to see what to do and this course shows me each step I need to take for a successful drawing. I am so glad I found your site. Now I need a course like this on painting so please get busy on crating one if you haven’t started already. 🙂

David, Your instruction is awe-inspiring. Your artful expression to the details have addressed the areas of portraiture that were difficult for me to understand from other instructors and from what I’ve read in art books (such as measuring and blocking in). I’m excited about going through each lesson again as I begin to draw the portrait I started. The PDF is a good reference point, but the visual instruction is the only way for me to learn techniques. Thank you for all the hard work you must have gone through to put this together. It’s exactly what I was looking for.

I am really enjoying this course. It has provided me with valuable keys for achieving an accurate translation of subject and form. I’ve been struggling with understanding the methods of sighting and triangulation as well as scale and framing. The instruction is simple and very effective. After just one evening of watching the videos, I experienced many “AHA!” moments which allowed me to correct my approach to estimating the dimensions and landmarks of my subject. I am very pleased with the material Mr. Jamieson has provided and feel that it was worth every penny. I look forward to seeing more courses offered by your studio. Thank you, Mr. Jamieson.

Jake

I just completed my first time through the lesson! I am totally impressed and inspired. I first thought I would watch the lessons through a couple of times and then attempt a portrait drawing on my own using my newly learned skills. After the detailed instruction, I believe I can begin after one time through and use the lessons as a reference in the process. I can’t wait to begin. I have sought portrait instruction through the years in books and classes but have not found one that offered so much material and so easily followed. I am a self taught artist. You have added a whole new dimension to my learning curve. Thank you.

Watching David Jamieson draw a head-and-shoulders pencil portrait of a young woman is a lengthy and mesmerising experience – indeed, it takes many hours of viewing (in my case, several days). For the great majority of the time, we see only his pencils at work on particular areas of the image (eyes, hair, forehead, etc), moving gently back and forth over the surface of the paper, their sounds often all that can be heard, but more often a background to his commentary, spoken as he works, so that we understand as well as visualise what is going on. It’s a master-class of sorts – a skilled practitioner goes to work in front of us, commenting as he does so. But it is also a visual entertainment, drawing you in and urging you to see what happens next. The musical equivalence is of a symphony rather than a song.
At one level, this ‘on-line course’ is a sequence of instructional videos (here’s how to make a highly-detailed portrait in pencil), each one helpfully framed with a paragraph or a page of explanatory text. At another, it’s a slow-motion study of how a skilled artist expresses a beautifully-detailed image from the blankness of a piece of grey paper, the face emerging – sometimes uncannily – from no more than a few initial marks to become a confirmed, apparently three-dimensional human presence. (It is far more polished and finished than, say, a Holbein pencil drawing, but his were the portraits which came to mind as I watched. So did the pencil portraits of Ingres.) At still another level, it is a meditation on the nature of representational art, for it prompts the question: Surely a photograph would achieve much the same ends as this painstaking drawing, but without the effort? The answer, though, would be emphatic denial: as a study of a young woman’s head, this far exceeds any photograph in its compelling visual appeal and hence its artistic value – it is a work of the hand and not the lens and much of its value lies in the fact that a human being can make such a beguilingly ‘real’ representation.
There is nothing overtly ‘arty’ about what we witness, if, by ‘arty’ we mean the dramatic, openly gestural visual performance. Do not look here for a face emerging from energetic scribbles and smudged backgrounds, staring out from the grime and gloom. (Such images can be just as exciting, but they come motivated by a different intention.) It is nonetheless ‘art’ inasmuch as it demonstrates what all successful visual artists must achieve: a disciplined, systematic and painstaking interrogation of form and the union of hand and eye with understanding. There are moments of forensic attention to the most subtle of shading, the fine precision of line, the exact weight of tone (‘value’ in the commentary). But there is also what can fairly be called ‘beauty’ – not only in the face itself but in the accomplishment of the image, which is beautiful and which begs to be looked at many times over a long period: a work of art.
Watching the videos, two choices offer: to enjoy the experience as a deliberative meditation in its own right (it’s always good to watch a skilled practitioner at work, be it a blacksmith, a leather-worker, a brick-layer or a visual artist, while asking how much further the artist must go to escape being merely the crafts-person); or to try for oneself to recreate the slow, detailed lesson in one’s own practice. ‘Gosh – I could do that!’ is one possible reaction (I suspect the one David Jamieson hopes to stimulate). Equally possible is: ‘I’ll never be able to do anything as good as that!’ Whatever the reaction, I recommend this experience. For anyone interested in the making of images, particularly those of the human face, and using traditional methods to do so, this is awe-inspiring.

I am currently only about 1/3 thru the course and it is everything I had hoped! It is broken down into small/short snippets of process that I find easy to learn and apply. Sometimes instructors can get a little ‘moonbeamish’ with their presentation, but not David. Nothing better than concrete/useful cookbook ways of proceeding thru the process of blocking in…the most important piece of getting a likeness.

Somehow, much to my surprise I’ve become 66 years old. I’ve been trying, with minimal success to learn the mechanics, as well as the Feel (which comes more naturally) of how to draw faces. Triangulation, comparative measurement seemed like cold mathematical systems, antithetical to real Expression and Soul. Wrong ! I’m getting So Much out of your teaching:systematic, clear, precise and concise with wonderful results in your finished, or at least “that’s It .. I’m Done ! drawings. You’ve shown me that, as with music, Soul /Discipline/are proven tools, allowing one to keep moving unveiling and peeling away layers…..working towards the heart of some kind of Mystery that connects us, are Important and Necessary. Ah, it appears that you Can, teach an Old Dog new tricks..
Deep thanks david logan

I enjoyed my time at the school and look forward to attending in the future.
